Improved Confinement

In 1997 and 1998 ‘improved confinement’ modes of operation (similar to the H-mode observed in conventional tokamaks) were achieved. The clearest evidence of this is given by the high speed video images which show a very sharply defined edge to the plasma, indicating a low level of turbulence and hence good confinement. These exciting results are still being analysed.
