Methods of employment
at Culham

There are various ways individuals may come to work at or with UKAEA:

  • PhDs: these are usually 3 year courses with specific training in plasma physics techniques, in which a student works with a supervisor to develop their knowledge and undertake a major original research project, for which they must write a thesis, and on which they will be examined. The supervision is likely to be split between an on-site supervisor, who is close to the research project, and can assist training and advise on day to day issues, and a university supervisor, who can provide a broader perspective and independent mentor. UKAEA takes on a number of PhD students each year covering many aspects of our work programme, and there are considerable opportunities for learning with many courses, lectures and a summer school at Culham.

CASE PhD studentships become available from time to time - see the vacancies page for information.

  • Temporary research associates: these are fixed length contracts, usually 2-3 years, focusing on particular areas of research at Culham. Therefore they are ideal for postgraduates interested in starting a career in fusion science, or for someone wishing to gain experience in certain fields and techniques employed in the work at Culham. Positions are regularly available in many of our fields of research - for more information on the types of work possible, see the descriptions on the science pages.

  • Employment through a contract agency. These are usually fixed term (but renewable) appointments via an agency for work in specific areas of science or technical support. Work can be on a range of bases, and contracts can be flexible, to accommodate special requirements.

  • Permanent staff positions - are available from time to time for individuals with particular expertise and potential. In some cases these may follow temporary positions.

  • Summer students - we usually employ a number of vacation students each summer. It helps to be reasonably computer literate. For more information on the fields of work, and to contact us about this see the links from the science pages.

  • Year-in-industry students - this is a specific scheme for students wishing to take a year of their degree in a workplace setting. UKAEA has employed a number of students on this basis and is always interested in motivated individuals who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the work at Culham.

  • Via collaboration with a university (click here for information).
