News from MAST - March 2007

Following the engineering break at the end of 2006 re-conditioning of MAST has continued. After vessel boronisation was carried out on 5 Feb, high confinement (H- mode) operation was readily established. New diagnostics have been commissioned, several developed in partnership with colleagues from around the world.

A new spectroscopy system for turbulence studies, developed in collaboration with the KFKI-RMKI/EURATOM Association in Hungary, has produced first measurements.  In addition, first measurements of plasma rotation have been obtained from a new edge Doppler spectroscopy system. Tests on a new compact neutral particle analyzer are also being carried out in collaboration with IPP Greifswald, Germany and the Ioffe Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia. Collaborators from CEA Cadarache also visited MAST to participate in recent ELM control experiments.

The new PINI neutral beam source was conditioned up to 1.5MW for three seconds although commissioning has been temporarily suspended whilst further investigations of the power supply characteristics are carried out.
