Research policy statement

It is the policy of Culham Centre for Fusion Energy to seek to achieve the highest standards with regard to good research practice and the handling of potential scientific misconduct.

CCFE's employment conditions state that 'Employees have a duty to recognise ethical standards governing particular professions'. While this clearly covers scientific professionalism, and Culham's system of internal refereeing of papers provides a further safeguard, to ensure the highest standards CCFE has adopted all the principles in EPSRC's Guide to Good Practice in Science and Engineering Research.

All CCFE staff who are involved in science and engineering research are expected to have read EPSRC's Guide to Good Practice in Science and Engineering Research and to abide by it. The Guide to Good Practice will be made available to all new members of staff.

If a member of staff believes that he/she is being required to act in a way which is in breach of these principles, or has a concern about the conduct of others, he/she should raise the matter through his/her line management or, where appropriate, directly with the Director, CCFE, (the nominated 'Senior Person') who is responsible for overseeing and directing this process. The right of appeal will be to the Chairman of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority's Board Assurance Committee.

Other staff involved in scientific work not funded by research councils, but which involves publications or reports to external bodies, will also be expected to comply with the spirit of EPSRC's guide, and any good scientific practice requirements specifically notified to CCFE by the funding agency or external recipients of the work.

These obligations apply equally to CCFE employees, contractors, hired staff and collaborators from other Associations and Universities engaged on scientific or engineering work at Culham.
