Fusion research fellowships

Research fellowships currently available at CCFE and partner organisations:

Culham Fusion Research Fellowship

Closing date: 28 February each year, exceptional cases will be considered any time

Each year we intend to appoint up to two outstanding physicists or engineers who have recently completed doctorates, to two-year research fellowships in any field of fusion research conducted at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy.

Candidates need to be highly motivated and show initiative. Managed and/or self-directed personal training and career development at Culham and elsewhere will be available and there will be opportunities for conference attendance. Overseas placements with our collaborators will be encouraged. The appointments will be two-year fixed term staff positions.

Requirements

In general, successful candidates will have completed their doctorates in the previous five years. Candidates need a good degree in physics, mathematics, materials or engineering science and a relevant PhD, preferably in fusion research. Since academic excellence is one of the selection criteria, it is recommended candidates mention significant prizes or other recognition.

Contact

To apply please send a completed application form and, in addition, a full CV (including publications) and short (1-2 page) personal statement of your research interests including a brief outline of a possible 2-year research programme, to Irene Frangulli at irene.frangulli@ccfe.ac.uk or to:

Principality of Monaco/ITER Postdoctoral Fellowships 2010

ITER welcomes applications for the Principality of Monaco/ITER Postdoctoral Research Fellowships which will allow recent PhD graduates to join the ITER Organization for a period of up to two years.

Within the ITER project research possibilities exist in many areas of fusion science and technology, including:

  • Burning plasma physics (confinement, stability, plasma-wall interactions, control, energetic particle physics)
  • Heating and current drive physics and technology
  • Fusion plasma diagnostics
  • Superconducting magnet technology
  • Electrical engineering
  • Mechanical engineering/structural analysis
  • Remote handling technology
  • Vacuum technology and plasma fuelling technology
  • Cryogenics
  • Thermohydraulics.

Apply to ITER for a postdoctoral position if:

  • Your PhD was awarded after 1 January 2007 or you are about to obtain one
  • You would like to carry out a research project and to participate in publications of high-quality journal articles in fusion science and technology.
